The problem comes in when people are not taught to think on these levels. They are taught to focus on the desire for compensation or money or fame or material goods.
And so they forget about the fact that the only way they will get these things is by working hard and doing things that benefit themselves and others in some small way. The truth of the matter is that all worthwhile things in life are meant to be shared with others. If you only ever receive what you deserve (which is usually nothing), then how can you ever feel worthwhile?
